The Problem: Carbon Fiber Cracks Can Ruin Your Day
Carbon fiber is very strong. But it can break. When it gets a crack, it is not good.
You see a crack in your carbon fiber part. It looks bad. You might think you need to buy a new one. A new carbon fiber part costs a lot of money. Some parts cost $500 to $5000 or more!
The crack gets bigger if you do not fix it. Then your part might break all the way. This is bad for:
- Your car parts
- Your bike frame
- Your motorcycle parts
- Your sports gear
The Problem Gets Worse: What Happens When You Don’t Fix Cracks
When cracks stay, more bad things happen:
- The crack gets bigger
- The part gets weaker (up to 50% weaker!)
- Water gets in
- It looks ugly
- It might break when you use it
Water makes the crack worse. The carbon fiber layers start to come apart. This is called delamination damage.
Some people try to fix it the wrong way. They use the wrong stuff. This makes the problem worse.
The Solution: How to Fix Carbon Fiber Cracks the Right Way
We have 28+ years making carbon fiber products. We know how to fix cracks the right way.
You can fix most carbon fiber cracks at home. Or you can ask us to help. We make custom carbon fiber parts that are strong and look good.
What You Need to Fix Carbon Fiber Cracks
Tools you need:
- Wet sandpaper (120 grit to 2000 grit)
- Epoxy resin (with hardener)
- Heavy carbon fiber cloth
- Rubbing alcohol to clean
- Polishing wax for the end
All these things cost about $50-$200. This is much less than a new part!
Step 1: Check the Crack
Not all cracks are the same. Look at this table:
Crack Type | What It Looks Like | How Hard to Fix |
---|
Clear coat crack | Just on top, shiny part | Easy (2-4 hours) |
Matrix crack | In the black part, no fibers broken | Medium (4-24 hours) |
Structural crack | Fibers are broken, part bends | Hard (24-72 hours) |
Look at your crack. If you see broken fibers, it is a bad crack. You might need help from experts like us.
Step 2: Clean and Prep
Clean is very important! If you skip this, your fix will fail (53% of fixes fail from bad cleaning).
- Wash the part with soap and water
- Dry it well
- Wipe with rubbing alcohol
- Let it dry again
Now sand around the crack:
- Use 120 grit wet sandpaper
- STOP if you see black dust (this means you hit the carbon)
- Sand in a circle around the crack
- Make the area a bit rough so the epoxy can stick
Step 3: Fix the Crack
Now for the main fix:
For small cracks (clear coat only):
- Mix your epoxy resin
- Put a thin layer on the crack
- Let it dry
- Add more layers (2-3 total)
- Let it dry fully (check the epoxy box for time)
For bigger cracks (with broken fibers):
- Cut a piece of carbon fiber cloth bigger than the crack
- Mix your epoxy resin
- Put the cloth on the back of the crack
- Soak it with epoxy
- Push out any air bubbles
- Let it dry for at least 24 hours
Step 4: Sand and Polish
After the epoxy is hard, you need to make it pretty:
- Wet sand with 400 grit
- Then 600 grit
- Then 1000 grit
- Then 1500 grit
- Then 2000 grit
- Polish with car wax
Now your carbon fiber part should look good again!

Success Rates of Different Carbon Fiber Repairs
Look at how good each fix works:
Method | Strength Back | Cost | Who Does It |
---|
Resin fill only | 82% | Low ($) | You at home |
Carbon fiber patch | 95% | Medium ($$) | You with good tools |
Professional repair | 98% | High ($$$) | Expert shop |
New OEM part from us | 100% | Medium-High ($$-$$$) | We make it for you |
When we make a new part for you, it is as strong as the original. When you fix a crack, it is never quite as strong.
Common Mistakes When Fixing Carbon Fiber
People make these mistakes when they try to fix carbon fiber:
- Not cleaning the area (53% of fails)
- Using the wrong materials (37% of fails)
- Sanding too deep into the carbon layers (43% of fails)
- Not letting the epoxy cure long enough (18% of fails)
- Using too much resin (makes it 28% heavier)
We do not make these mistakes when we make your custom carbon fiber parts.
Real Cases: Before and After
Case 1: Carbon Fiber Hood Crack
A customer had a crack in their carbon fiber hood. They tried to fix it but made it worse. Then they came to us.
Before: Large crack with rough edges After: Looks like new, strength test passed
Case 2: Carbon Fiber Bike Frame
A racing bike had a small crack in the frame. The owner used fiberglass to fix it (wrong!). It broke again in two weeks.
We made a new part with better carbon fiber. It has been strong for 3 years now.
Why Choose Us Instead of Fixing It Yourself
When you fix a crack, the part is never as good as new. Here is why our new parts are better:
- We use vacuum bagging for no air bubbles
- Our carbon fiber is aerospace grade
- We test every part for strength
- Our clear coat has UV protection
- We match the carbon weave pattern perfectly
- We give a warranty
As a carbon fiber manufacturer in China with 28+ years experience, we make the best parts.
